Two steals by LU senior guard Marrisa Lehnig led the Lindenwood women’s basketball to its first victory in five games as they beat Southwest Baptist 71-66 last night at the Hyland Arena.

“Marissa comes in and takes the ball out of a freshman’s hands after a defensive rebound; that’s what a senior does,” Lindenwood coach Tony Francis told lindenwoodlions.com. “A senior makes a freshman look bad. That’s what they’re supposed to do.”

Sophomore guard Jenny Rocha led LU with 18 points. Her points per game average is now 9.7.

Kassidy Gengenbacher had 17 points and Morgan Johnson finished with 13 points including a go-ahead three late in the second half after one of Lehnig’s steals.

LU had a slightly different starting five than normal. Senior forward Caroline Bourlioux came off the bench for the first time this season. Francis said the shake up is part of finding what mix gives the Lions the best chance to win.

“I’m trying to find different mixes and let people know there’s an expectation,” Francis told lindenwoodlions.com. “All we want them to do is listen, do what they’re told, and good things are going to happen because they have the talent.”
