The attempted sexual assault that was reported by a female student a few weeks ago called Lindenwood’s security into action.

Junior Hope McCoy believes the university made a strong effort to inform students. “I think they are handling it well,” McCoy said. “They have informed the student body about being safe and what has happened.”

Even though the attempted assault was later recanted, that doesn’t mean future crimes won’t be committed. John Bowman, Director of Security, said the policy for reporting campus crimes depends on the defendant.

“Anything we get reported, we investigate,” Bowman said. “Security will always ask the victim if they would like a police report [to be filed].”

The only instance in which security will report an issue to police is if the reporting party requests it. Students always have the option to call the police instead of security.

Bowman also said the police are occasionally involved with other campus issues that campus security does not have capabilities to handle.

“We use the police K-9 for dorm searches and the police department regularly patrols the campus and conducts traffic stops,” Bowman said.

As far as the ongoing issue of security, Bowman said there are many things students can do to stay safe. “Walk in pairs; use the buddy system. Walk with keys in your hand so you can be aware of surroundings.” He stressed caution. “If you feel something is wrong, don’t hesitate to call.”

The university also offers escort service for students who wish to be walked to their cars or class and there are over 10 emergency telephone poles located around campus.

Lindenwood’s Public Safety and Security office moved to a new location last week to 110 S. Kingshighway, across from Jimmy John’s. The office currently employs 12 full-time and 10 part-time security officers. There are always at least two to four officers on duty 24 hours a day.

The Lindenwood Public Safety and Security website offers tips for reporting crimes, services provided and many other resources for students. To report a crime, you can dial 4911 from any university phone or 636-949-4911 from cell phone.
