Heading to Kansas for the first out-of-state road trip of the season, the women’s soccer team captured the second conference win of the year with a 1-0 victory over Washburn.

Carrying momentum from the win against Missouri Western on Sept. 21, the Lions looked to build a winning streak as they faced the Ichabods. The team struggled to fall into a rhythm and LU’s first shot of the evening would not come until the 19th minute. While they were able to put up four shots by the end of the first 45 minutes, Washburn matched the effort taking five shots of their own.

After a first-half stalemate between the two teams, the game remained scoreless.

The Lions came out and played stronger game in the second half, determined to increase pressure on both sides of the field. Pairing several attacks with a defensive stand that limited the Ichabods to just three shots, LU quickly took control of the game. The Lions were able to create more offensive opportunities in the second half, tallying eight shots, but it was not until the 83rd minute when they finally found the scoreboard.

After being taken down in the in the box by a Washburn defender, junior midfielder Danielle Torry was awarded a penalty kick. Her shot reached the back of the net as she scored her first goal of the season. LU would take the lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the game.

At the conclusion of the 90 minutes, goalkeeper Melissa Weiss earned her second consecutive shutout. Making four saves, her save percentage has risen yet again and now sits at 81.5. She now has four shutouts on the books.

The Lions now hold a record of 3-3-1 and move to 2-1 in conference. The second and final game of the Kansas road trip will be on Sunday against Emporia State.
