The demonstrations started following remarks made by President Donald Trump criticizing protests of the national anthem.

At a campaign rally in Alabama on Friday, Trump stated: “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a b—- off the field right now. Out.'”

Members of the league decided to protest against Trump’s remarks at the rally. Many players knelt or stood with linked arms during the national anthem. The Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers did not take the field at all during the anthem.

In a tweet during Sunday’s games, Trump said, “…NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN. Boring games yes, but many stay away because they love our country. League should back U.S.”

Another tweet read, “Great solidarity for our National Anthem and for our Country. Standing with locked arms is good, kneeling is not acceptable. Bad ratings!” [/ezcol_1half_end]
