Lions five-game winning streak comes to a halt

Looking to build off of the momentum they gained with their four-game sweep over Missouri Southern State, the Lions traveled to Bolivar, Mo., to take on Southwest Baptist University. They were unable to keep the five-game winning streak alive however, as they lost three of the four games to the Bearcats.

Game one of the series proved to be a big offensive contest for both teams. The Lions jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the second inning, as center fielder Wade Roethermich and designated hitter Jerry Roam singled home one run each. Star first baseman Mike Failoni then brought both of them home with a home run to extend the Lions advantage.

After Lions starter Austin Klein allowed one run in the third inning, Mike Failoni stepped to the plate to get that run right back for the Lions. Failoni hit his second home run of the game to give the Lions a seemingly comfortable 6-1 advantage.

That lead was short lived, however, as Klein allowed six runs over the next two innings to tie the game at 7-7 before being removed from the contest. Things continued to go well for the Bearcats when Dylan Terrell entered for the Lions, as Southwest Baptist quickly extended their lead to 9-7 and held on to the lead for a victory.

Game two of the series again started aggressively on offense for the Lions, as shortstop Nathan Prindle homered in both the second and fourth innings to give the Lions an early 4-1 lead.

After allowing the Bearcats to trim the lead to 4-3, the Lions took over on offense, scoring eight runs the rest of the way to cruise to a 12-4 victory. Failoni once again starred offensively, hitting his third home run of the series in the eighth inning.

Southwest Baptist started strong in game three, jumping out to a 9-0 lead in three innings against Lions starter Zac Pearman. Pearman allowed 12 hits in less than three innings of work on the day.

Despite a three run rally in the sixth inning for the Lions, they were unable to overcome the early deficit, and fell 11-5.

The final game of the series featured much less offensive firepower than the previous three, as the two teams were scoreless for the first two innings.

The Bearcats got on the scoreboard first in the third inning, as they struck for four runs against Lions starter Geoff Hartlieb.

The Lions answered back the following inning, as they added two runs of their own, including a single by Marshall Vallandingham that scored Failoni for the first run of the game.

Although the Lions held the Bearcats scoreless for the remainder of the game, they were unable to add any more offense, falling 4-2.

The Lions now hold a record of 10-15 and continue their schedule with a double header on the road on Tuesday against Quincy University before heading home for a four game series against Pittsburg State University over the weekend.
