If there is one team on campus that has figured out the formula for progress, it’s the Lindenwood women’s soccer program.
Since November, the team has been making strides to improve upon its .500 record last season. The Lions went 6-6-2 in the MIAA and 7-9-3 overall, which earned them a fifth place standing in a conference they transitioned into just three years ago.
The Lions will return 13 core members, including 3rd Team All-MIAA player Molly White, as well as four Honorable Mention All-MIAA players.
“During spring, our chemistry got a lot better, and I can tell that we still have that even after summer break,” junior Kristen Brewer said. She thinks they can draw a lot of energy from the strong bonds within the team.
This season, however, building strong relationships may take some work. That’s because out of the 24-person roster, 11 are freshmen. Bringing in a large class is often seen as an adversity, but the Lions are more than confident in their new teammates.
“It will definitely be a challenge, but I also think [ the freshmen] will be our biggest strength,” sophomore Becky Roberts, who led the team in goals last fall, said. She said the rookies have added a lot to the team dynamic so far in pre-season.
Head coach Laurie Kaminski said the newcomers have already gelled well with the older players.
“They have done a good job of working themselves in,” Kaminski said. “Our returners have been very accepting and know this group of girls can help us get to the next level.”
For a team that thrives on progress, the only logical ambition for this season is to improve.
“We want to be in that top-four section of the conference where we can look to get a bid into the NCAA tournament,” Kaminski said.
She believes the strong work ethic and good attitudes she has seen so far in practice will be an important part of attaining their goals.
The Lions will take on a schedule similar to last year, starting their first home stand on Sept. 8 at Hunter Stadium against University of Missouri-St. Louis, following the conclusion of the men’s soccer game.
