The St. Charles area is under an excessive heat warning until 7 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The warning means that the heat index will rise above 105 degrees every afternoon. Thursday looks to be the hottest day, when the heat index is predicted to hit 111 degrees.

The index — a combination of high temperatures and high humidity — increases the risk for heat-related illness.

To counter its effects, people should complete their daily routines as early as 7 a.m. or after 8 p.m., avoid alcohol and take more water breaks, said Charles Kelly, a meteorologist with the weather service in Weldon Spring.

Here’s the forecast for Tuesday through the rest of the week:

Tuesday will be mostly sunny with a high of 95 degrees. Tuesday night will be in the low 70s with east winds at 3 to 5 miles per hour.

Wednesday the high will be near 96. The lows are predicted to be in the upper 70s with south winds blowing at 3 to 8 miles per hour.

Thursday and Friday will be mostly sunny and hot with highs in the upper 90s and lows in the upper 70s.
