The men’s D1 ice hockey team split their series against the Robert Morris University Eagles this weekend, ending their win streak at eight games.

The Lions beat the Eagles 4-1 on Feb. 9 at the Edge Ice Arena in Chicago. Freshman forward Zach Mitchell opened up scoring for the Lions in the second period with a goal assisted by Tommy Heinzman and Mitch Riese. Mike Lozano, Alex Kalau and Graham Zagrodney also scored goals for the Lions in the game.

On Saturday, Feb. 10 the Lions fell to the Eagles 3-0. The Lions’ 26 shots on goal were all stopped by Eagles goalie Christopher Mallon. In the third period, both teams racked up penalties. Both Zagrodney and Mitchell and Eagle players Harrison Kohl and Connor McGovern received 10 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct. Kohl also received a five-minute facemask major.

Junior forward Cade Owad played in his 100th career game on Feb. 9. Owad has not missed a single game in his time with the Lions.

“It means a lot to be able to play alongside such great teammates and play for such a classy organization,” Owad said. “Good luck and good health have fortunately been on my side. I would like to thank my past and present teammates for everything they have done for me to be in this position.”

The Lions next play Feb. 16 and 17 against the University of Arkansas at the Jones Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas, for their last regular season games. The Lions then travel to Athens, Ohio, for the Central States Collegiate Hockey League playoffs Feb. 23-25.
