Men’s soccer has big first half, outlasts Ouachita Baptist 4-3

The Lions scored three goals in the first half on their way to beating Ouachita Baptist 4-3.

Lindenwood made set an aggressive tone in the half, outshooting the Tigers 14-4.

The first Lions goal came in the 10th minute from senior Fernando Cordero off a penalty kick. This was his third goal of the season. The Tigers tied the game in the in the 15th minute on a goal from junior Abraham Lazo.

The Lions took the lead right back in the 20th minute off a goal from junior Kyle Weinrich, his first of the season. To finish their strong first half with a 3-1 lead, the Lions scored another goal with under 10 seconds left on the clock. The goal was scored by senior Johannes Brendle. 

The Lions kept their foot on the gas to begin the second half. In the 51st minute, they scored again by way of a goal from junior Gaspar Alvarez to give Lindenwood the 4-1 lead. Ouachita Baptist started to cut into the Lions’ lead immediately after Alvarez’s goal. 

Lazo registered his second goal of the game for the Tigers, cutting the lead to 4-2. The Tigers scored again in the 64th minute on a goal from senior Colten Clark to cut the Lions lead to one goal.  But the Tigers’ comeback effort fell short, and the Lions secured the 4-3 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Aleksa Nenadic played all 90 minutes in net for the Lions and made three saves while allowing three goals. For the Tigers, senior goalkeeper Matt Gutierrez played all 90 minutes in net. He made five saves while allowing four goals.

The Lions outshot the Tigers 21-10 overall and 9-6 in shots on goal.

The win brings the Lions record to 8-4-3 overall and 2-2-1 in MIAA conference play. They have not registered a loss in their last four games.

The Lions’ season is coming close to the end with only three games remaining. Their next game is their last at home, and will be their senior day. The seniors’ final game at Hunter Stadium comes Sunday Oct. 28, at 1:30 p.m.
