Lindenwood’s women’s ice hockey defense was in full form as they won Saturday afternoon after tying in Friday’s game.

Although Robert Morris had a total of 42 shots on goal, Lindenwood’s precision offense only had 15 shots on goal, scoring 40 percent of those shots. Goalie Sophie Wolf blocked 98 percent of RMU’s shots.

The two schools went back and forth with turnover after turnover. Kayla Martinez opened the afternoon with the first goal of the game for Lindenwood, assisted by Cierra Paisley. Later in the first period, Jada Burke, assisted by Erin Near, scored the game’s second goal.

In the second period, the Colonials came out shooting, with nine shots on goal during a power play. During the second power play of the period for RMU, one shot made it through.

The Lions responded with a third goal of their own, scored by Courtney Ganske, assisted by Nikki Friesen and Taylor Kirwan.

Later on in the second, Lindenwood’s Sierra Burt scored the fourth goal during a powerplay. She was assisted by Megan Wagner and Hannah Alt.

Although a lot of time was spent near the Lindenwood goal in the third period, Wolf kept her net free of any shots. The Lion’s defense showed through in a big way all 20 minutes, with players crashing in on goal and keeping the Colonials away from their goalie. Shot after shot was fired by Robert Morris, but none made it past the Lion’s defense or their goalie.

Nicole Guagliardo scored the Lions’ fifth goal of the game on an empty net, assisted by Kirwan. Minutes later, Burt scored the sixth goal, giving her two goals scored for the game.

The Lions ended the afternoon with a final score of 6-1. The Lions play again on Feb. 22 against Syracuse University.
