The men’s soccer team started their season in thrilling fashion, losing the season opener on a near last-second goal, then redeeming themselves with a convincing win this past Sunday.

After the 2-1 loss to Christian Brothers University Friday, the coaches were left pondering the amount of preparation time allowed before the season. The season starts just two and a half weeks after the start of classes, allowing a window of opportunity for players and coaches to work together before the season.

“We ended up giving up a goal with barely any time left in the game.” said head coach Carl Hutter. “We’re still polishing ourselves up with final concentration on touches on the ball. We’re really proud of how they came back and played on Sunday.”

After giving up the game-winning goal with 34 seconds left in regulation, the men’s soccer team redeemed themselves on Sunday against Upper Iowa University, with a 3-1 victory.

The trio of goals were scored in the 32nd minute by Leon Silva, the 45th minute by Jacob Quinn and the 66th minute by Thomas Hutcheson. The Lion’s defense swarmed the Peacock’s offense the entire match, allowing just one goal in the 59th minute.

Hutter expressed his belief in a total team culture with the ultimate goal of competing in the post-season.

“We told them about the problems and had an old-school, chalkboard session to remind the players about responsibilities and duties,” said Hutter, “we also reminded them to celebrate team and togetherness, whether you’re playing a lot or playing a little.”

The Lions are approaching a series of road games. From September 20 through October 6th, the team only has one home game, with the other five matches being away games.

“The simple, basic thing we ask [players] to do is enjoy what you’re doing and keep working hard to raise your level,” Hutter said. “Always be ready, because when we call on you, we expect you to be ready to play. Even if you’re not playing enough in the game, then find a way to contribute to the team.”

The next match is Sept 15 vs the University of Missouri-St. Louis at Hunter Stadium.
