With two overtime losses in the final two matches, the No. 9 Lindenwood wrestling team lost its final regular season dual, 18-17, to No. 1 Maryville University. The Lions led early but were unable to solidify the win, as the Saints dominated the heavier weight classes.
Following a win from sophomore Batchka Zulkhuu, the Lions led the team score 17-9, but Maryville stormed back in the final three matches to capture three straight decisions.
Seniors John McArdle and Kenny Breaux, as well as freshman Jacob Borgmeyer, had opportunities to claim individual wins, as well as the team victory, late in their duals. Both Breaux and Borgmeyer wrestled into overtime, with Breaux fighting through three extra periods. All three came up short, however.
The loss comes just three days after the Lions finished the MIAA regular season a perfect 5-0 to claim the MIAA Regular Season Championship. The crosstown rivalry match with Maryville allowed the Lions to have a final tuneup before the postseason.
LU begins the postseason this Sunday, with the MIAA Tournament in Warrensburg, Missouri, hosted by the University of Central Missouri.
