Duncan Jones, the son of the late legendary singer David Bowie, whose next project is the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game “Warcraft“, debuted as a filmmaker with 2009’s “Moon” a very interesting film about a “lunar miner” named Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) who faces shocking circumstances as he struggles to make it through the last two weeks of his three-year contract of excavating energy sources from the Moon.
Bell’s robot assistant, Gerty (Kevin Spacey), is a great addition to the film, adding comic relief to the suspenseful story. Gerty also plays a very large role in the story, however, adding more than just a laugh.
This movie has many twists that are not predictable and are still fresh. The imagery is beautiful and the story is captivating and well-paced. This is Rockwell’s best performance in my opinion.
The large twists are revealed perfectly, making the viewer feel just as surprised as Bell. Despite the fact that it was released in 2009, its effects and visuals would have you believe that it was a more recent production. With a very interesting and engaging story, amazing acting and visuals ahead of their time, “Moon” is a perfect start for Jones’ evolving career.
“Moon” will be shown in Young Auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. as part of the LU Film Series.
Tonight’s film is “Interstellar” (2014).
