A RAVE alert was sent to all Lindenwood students and faculty following an investigation into a threatening political statement that was left in a female student’s dorm room and spread across social media.
At 10:47 p.m on Wednesday, Lindenwood student María Sanchez posted two pictures on Twitter of what her dorm room looked like when she walked in earlier that morning. Her roommate had used shoes, coat hangers and other items to create a divide down the center of the room. In the middle of the line was a note apparently left by her roommate.
The note read, “Hey Maria, Trump won so here’s a little preview of what is to come.”
Sanchez’s comment on Twitter read, “I walked into my room and my heart aches with pain.”
The Tweet spread on Thursday, being retweeted more than 34,000 times.
After learning of the incident, Lindenwood University opened an investigation, and was found to be an ill-conceived attempt at humor on the part of Sanchez’s roommate.
“Thankfully, the students involved in the incident have communicated and reconciled,” said Lindenwood Vice President of Student Development Ryan Guffey in the RAVE Alert.
He added that while the university stands behind the idea of free speech and tolerance, “statements or positions of hate, prejudice or social injustice are totally unacceptable.”
In a video posted to Sanchez’s Twitter account, she thanked everyone for the responses she received to the post.
Sanchez said, “I just want to thank everyone for showing so much love and support through this.”
