In the first period, the Oklahoma University Sooners took the lead against the Lindenwood Lions, but the Lions rallied and came back for a 5-3 win, sweeping the Sooners this weekend in Oklahoma City at the Blazers Ice Center.
The Sooners came out early in the first period and scored two goals despite the Lions leading in shots on goal 11-5.
Brad Edwards, senior forward, put a goal on the board in favor of the Lions at 1:48 in the second period with assists by Caleb Ernst and Tommy Heinzman with Oklahoma still ahead.
Later in the second period, freshman forward, Dom Kolbeins scored his first collegiate goal on a power play, assisted by senior Mike Lozano, bringing the game to a tie.
With less than five minutes remaining in the second period, forward Cade Owad gave Lindenwood a 3-2 lead with a goal assisted by Jordan Klimovsky and Alexander Carlsson.
Owad also had an assist in Friday night’s game, but scored his first goal of the regular season during Saturday’s game.
“It’s always nice to get the first one out of the way early, but we’re always looking to improve shift by shift and game by game. We can be happy, but never satisfied.” Owad said.
The team held its lead in the third period when sophomore Nick Greene scored his first goal as a Lion at 7:13 assisted by Lozano and Kolbeins.
The Sooners put one more goal on the board during a power play, but Lindenwood sealed the win with a goal with eight seconds left in the third by Heinzman, assisted by Edwards and freshman defenseman Matt Runyon.
The Lions’ wins this weekend put them at 2-0 early in the season and forced the Sooners into their fourth consecutive loss.
Lindenwood plays again on Sept. 24 against Missouri State. Puck drops at 2 p.m. at the Mediacom Ice Plex in Springfield, Missouri.
