The Lindenwood College Republicans are hosting an event to fill care packages for members of the U.S. military stationed in Qatar.
The event will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 in Harmon Hall Room 200.
Students wanting to donate can do so in the Veterans Affairs office in the LARC. Donations will be accepted from Monday, Oct. 16, to Friday, Oct. 20.
Qatar, with a population of just 2.57 million, is home to the biggest U.S military base in the Middle East. The Al Udeid Air Base houses 11,000 U.S. military members.
Most of the items on the recommended donations list consist of toiletries and non-perishable food items, as well as things like Taco Bell hot-sauce packets and NERF footballs.
Jonathan Dunlop president of the College Republicans, said students without the means to buy items to donate can also help by writing letters.
“We hope to have some meaningful items, including some letters from students donated,” Dunlop said. “They can be addressed to ‘soldier’ or even unaddressed since they’ll be packaged with all of the items inside the boxes. A low personal budget shouldn’t stop students from showing their support in nonfinancial ways, such as letters.”
Donations have been slow thus far, but the event is hoping to fill 15 large USPS boxes.
“We do have enough to fill up two boxes, and we hope that things will start accelerating,” Dunlop said.
