To help Phi Delta Theta alumnus member Wyatt Lanik’s mother as she fights Multiple Myeloma cancer, the fraternity held its annual Pie a Phi event in Spellmann cafe on Nov. 29.

Phi Delta Theta holds this event every year as one of its philanthropy events, but instead of supporting Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis treatment, the money is going to a fraternity member. 

Last year the fraternity raised about $300 for ALS, according to fraternity member Alex Burkut. On Nov. 29 students were able to buy one pie for a dollar, or six pies for $5 between 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 5 – 7 p.m.

People could hear the loud pop music and chanting from the fraternity brothers as soon as they walked into Spellmann. Students took full advantage of this opportunity. About seven fraternity brothers sat in chairs in front of the convenient store, with a tarp under them to secure the mess from the whipped cream and black plastic bags on to protect their clothes. 

The event lasted for one day, but was held at popular lunch and dinner times for more attraction. There were great smiles and positive body language at the event, according to Burkut. This event was inspired after Lanik posted about his mother’s cancer on Facebook, then the fraternity reached out to him.

“I would do anything for my brothers, so this is a way to help him out.” Burkut said. “I am very passionate about charities, so anything to help patients or family members, I’m all for it.”
