Lindenwood university is open to both the St. Charles and Belleville campus becoming temporary overflow hospitals for COVID-19, a spokesman said.

The number of infected individuals continues to steadily increase, leading both the Missouri and Illinois governors to scout for spaces to convert into hospital and isolation areas for COVID-19 patients.

In other states, like New York, sporting arenas have become a common choice for overflow spaces. However, on Wednesday, Missouri Governor Mike Parson announced the state will be using a “hotel model” because it can apply to communities both small and large.

As of now, Diane Moore, vice president for operations at Lindenwood, said there are no plans in place for any campus facilities to be used as overflow spaces.

But university director of communications Chris Duggan said Lindenwood is in contact with local public health and emergency management officials in both St. Charles County and St. Clair County, Illinois.

“[Lindenwood] is prepared to help out if needed,” Duggan said.

Other area universities have opened their campus in response to growing coronavirus needs.

Saint Louis University opened one of its dormitory halls this week for SSM health care workers on the frontline. The hospital SSM Health Saint Louis University is apart of the school’s medical program and campus. According to KMOV, 180 beds will be available to medical professionals who do not want to risk infecting their family members.
