The Hispanic Student Union (HSU) is actively recruiting members to join their organization.
Since the beginning of 2024, the executive board has been striving to be involved in campus life and advertising their initiative.
“We aim to foster a supportive environment for Hispanic students as well as holding events for all of campus to celebrate our various heritages,” Treasurer Sonora Bishop said. “We look forward to having general meetings with our members as well as servicing our communities on and off campus.”
Their first campus appearance happened at the organization fair during Lindenwood’s Welcome Week.
“I am looking forward to working with my Lindenwood peers and the community to cultivate our culture here on campus,” HSU president Lupita Gonzalez said. “I am most looking forward to growing the organization.”
HSU’s first campus-wide event took place at Spellman AB leadership room on Friday, Jan. 26. They hosted a “Hispanic Trivia Night” to inaugurate the organization and encourage people to join.
“I went to the event to introduce myself and get familiar with the exec team of the HSU this past Friday,” Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion Keela Ross said. “I was excited to not only meet them but show them the space in the CDI that is available and open to them.”
Members from the LU community attended the event, which provided an opportunity to learn facts about Hispanic cultures and get immersed in their music, food, and culture.
“I love that we now have a jumping-off point for Hispanic students on campus to voice opinions, seek support, and find community,” Bishop said.
Prizes were awarded to the trivia winners and empanadas were included in the food options.
“It is so important to have diverse student groups on our campus because it gives a true reflection of the diverse population that we have here on LU campus,” Ross said. “It expands students’ awareness, welcomes multiple perspectives, and helps build social skills. It also helps us ALL learn from our peers who come from various backgrounds and share experiences. I look forward to working with Lupita and her team on the exciting events HSU is planning.”
