For the second consecutive game, the women’s basketball team has won, this time beating Southeast Missouri State by a score of 67-53 on Jan. 30.
Lindenwood Makayla Wallace, Justis Odom, and Ellie Brueggemann each scored at least 15 points in the win.
The Lions put up 21 points in the first period, with Bureggemann leading the charge in the period with eight. The freshman guard successfully drained two three-pointers, in addition to a two-point field goal. Odom had four points in the period as well, as did Wallace. Mykayla Cunningham and Alyssa Nielsen each scored in the period, Cunningham with a successful three-point shot, and Nielsen with a two-pointer.
Overall, the Lions went 12 for 30 in overall shot attempts in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw much less offense than the first, as only 20 points were scored between the two teams, 12 of which were at the hand of Lindenwood.
Odom began the period with two successful free throw attempts, followed shortly thereafter by a layup and jump throw by Nielsen to add four more. Wallace tallied four more points in the period as well, and Brueggemann had two points with a successful jump throw late in the quarter.
The Lions saw a decrease in overall shot percentage in the second quarter, draining only seven of their 19 attempts. In the third quarter of play, the Lions were outscored by SEMO for the first time in the game, with the Redhawks putting up 20 points to Lindenwoods 15. Odom and Wallace led the charge in the quarter, with Odom tallying five points, three of which on free throws, and Wallace had six of her own. Cunningham and Mya Skoff also tallied two points each in the quarter.
The Lions shot at a rate of 10 for 22 in the quarter, their highest percentage of the game to that point.
In the final quarter of play, the Lions offense once again regained its footing, putting up 19 points over SEMO. However, the defense showed off as well, only allowing the Redhawks to get sixteen shots off, half of which came on penalty free throws
Brueggemann started the quarter with five straight points, two free throws, and a three-pointer. Cunningham then added four more points to her tally, giving her a total of 11 in the game. Odom tallied six consecutive points in three attempts, and Wallace finished her game by adding two more points on a fastbreak layup.
The Lions are now set to welcome the Western Illinois University to the Hyland Arena on Feb. 1, with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
