Despite playing down a player for the last 33 minutes of the game, the Lindenwood women’s soccer team overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat Austin Peay State University 3-2.
The game-winning goal was scored by Tasneem Dizdarevic, who scored from the corner in the 88th minute of the match. It was the third and final goal of a Lindenwood rally that saw them score three times in the last 22 minutes of the match.
Both Lindenwood and Austin Peay would be held scoreless in the first half of play, though the Lindenwood defense kept the ball out of their zone, only allowing one scoring attempt. That one attempt was blocked by goalkeeper Caroline Ritter, who saved three attempts in the game, allowing just the two to sneak by her.
Austin Peay would score twice to open the second half, with the first score coming within the first five minutes of play. The first of these two goals scored in the 50th minute, came by Lindsay McMahon, with an assist from her Governor teammate Kiley Reese. Then, 14 minutes later, Austin Peay would score again, as Alec Baumgardt scored, again assisted by Reese.
Right before the Lions went on their scoring spree, they went down a player. Right as Austin Peay scored their second goal, Compton was yellow-carded, and was subsequently red-carded a minute and a half later, putting the Lions down a player for the remainder of the game.
However, that’s when things began to look more positive for the Lions offense. Three minutes after the red card, Rachel Jackson scored on a penalty kick to make the score 2-1. Six minutes later, Georgia Pardalos would do the same, scoring on a penalty kick of her own to tie the score at two.
In the closing minutes of the game, Dizdarevic scored from the corner, giving the Lions a 3-2 lead with less than two minutes left in the match. Austin Peay got two penalty kicks in the final minute after a yellow card was given to Lindenwood’s Allison Schrumpf, but both were blocked in goal by Ritter, securing the match for the Lions.
The win moves the team’s record to 3-3 on the young season. The team will now go on a two-game road trip, playing at Southern Illinois University on Sept. 8 and DePaul University on Sept. 12. The Lions return home on Sept. 22 to play Western Illinois University at 1 p.m. that afternoon.
