The Lindenwood women’s volleyball team kicked off their two game set in the Lindenwood Invitational with a win against Southern Illinois University Carbondale, 3-2.
The match went five sets, and the eventual win moved the team to 3-4 on the 2024 season.
Also within the match, Lindenwood recorded 77 kills, which broke a school record between both Division-II and Division-I play.
More records would be broken in the game as well. Nyah Wilson recorded 19 digs throughout the five sets, which moves her over 1000 for her time at Lindenwood. That puts the senior sixth all time at Lindenwood, according to the university athletic department.
On the mention of digs, five different Lions recorded double digits in that respective stat in the match. Jessie Seidel led the team with 24, and also recorded 10 assists, good for a double double. Joining Seidel with double digit digs was Allie Otten, Abby VanBuskirk, Addy McAleer, and Wilson.
Elsewhere statistically, Otten and VanBuskirk led the way with assists, with Otten recording 33, and VanBuskirk recording 23. Wilson and Autumn Bax led the team in kills with 18 each, with Rebecca Janke shortly behind the duo with 15 of her own. Janke would lead the team in blocks, with five.
Lindenwood would drop the first set, by a score of 28-26 in sudden death. However, in the second set, Lindenwood held control more dominantly, winning 25-17. Set three would be the second and final set the Lions dropped, though doing so narrowly, by a score of 25-23. With their backs against the wall, the Lions knocked off two straight set wins, 25-20 in the fourth, and 15-11 in the fifth to win the match.
Tomorrow, the Lions will play again, this time against Austin Peay State University. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m. at the Hyland Arena. The following day, the Lions will head to Columbia, Missouri for a game against the University of Missouri.
