After a scoreless tie against Eastern Illinois earlier in the week, Lindenwood’s women’s soccer team defeated Southern Illinois University Edwardsville by a score of 2-0.
The game was a very cleanly played effort by the Lions, with goalie Caroline Ritter going a perfect six for six on saved goals, aiding in holding the Cougars scoreless. The game remained scoreless for a lengthy period of time, with Lindenwood first finding the net in the 50th minute of the game, five minutes after halftime ended. Allison Schrumpf was responsible for the first score, marking her first goal of the season. Lily Sutter was credited with the assist on the goal as well.
A mere six minutes later, Lindenwood would strike again. Anna Johnson was able to sneak the ball past the Cougars goalie for the third time this season, with an assist coming from Mackenzie Compton. The game went scoreless from there out, giving Lindenwood the win.
The Lions did face a bit of adversity later in the game, drawing three yellow cards within 12 minutes of play, starting in the 63rd minute. Tasneem Dizdarevic drew the first of the three in that 63rd minute, with Sophia Mueller drawing another six minutes later in the 69th minute. In the 74th minute, Johnson drew a yellow card of her own. Despite this, no Lion was ejected, and the last 16 minutes of play went off cleanly.
The win marks Lindenwood’s sixth of the season, giving them a record of 6-4-1. However, they remain undefeated in conference play, with a record of 2-0-1. The team returns to play on Thursday, Oct. 3, as they welcome Southern Indiana University to Hunter Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. that evening.
