Lindenwood’s women’s hockey traveled to Bemidji Minnesota to take on the Beavers, as both teams were looking for their first win of the season.
At 10:02 of the first period, the Beavers would get on the board first with an even-strength goal. Then at 17:41, the Beavers would score again, this time on the power play. Less than two minutes later, the Beavers would score their third goal of the period. The Lions were held scoreless in the first, but Lions goalie Anna LaRose was able to make 14 saves in the period.
The second period is where the Lions were able to get on the board. At the five-minute mark, Silje Gundersen would light the lamp, with an assist from Sidney Jackel. With 15 seconds left in the second, the Beavers would restore their three-goal lead scoring to make it 4-1. Lions goalie Madison Bowtell made nine saves in the period.
A lot happened in a short time to end the third period. It started at 15:48 when the Beavers scored an empty net goal to make the score 5-1. To the Lions’ credit, they would fight back around a minute later when Chloe Corbin scored to make it 5-2, assisted by Jackel. With 1:24 left in the game, the Lions would score again, and again it was Corbin. This goal was assisted by Zsofia Pazmandi and Morgan Neitzke. With five seconds left, the Beavers would add a second empty net goal to make the final score 6-3 in favor of the Beavers. Bowtell would make 19 stops in the period, though the Lions would get outshot 48-27 in the game.
The next night, the Lions looked to rebound in game two against the Beavers. However at 5:57 into the first period, the Beavers took the lead. The lead was short-lived, as the Lions would answer right back at 8:27. The goal was scored by Hannah Dods. Then at 17:18, the Lions would get their first lead with a goal by Neitzke, assisted by Jackel and Ellie Muscedere. The Lions’ goalie Bowtell would make eight saves in the period.
The Lions would be held off the scoreboard for the second period. The only goal that period would be scored by the Beavers, at 14:28, to tie the game up at two. Bowtell stopped 12 shots in the second period.
At 3:56 of the third period, Bemidji State would take the lead back with their third goal of the game. Then at 8:14, the Lions tie the game at 3. The goal was scored by Molly Henderson assisted by Olivia Grabianowski and Elina Zilliox. The game would remain tied at the end of regulation, forcing overtime. Bowtell made four saves in the third period.
Both teams would be held scoreless in the overtime period, meaning that the game ends in a tie, but the game goes to an exhibition shootout. In overtime Botwell stopped five shots. In the exhibition shootout, the Lions would get goals from Neitzke and Henderson, and Botwell stopped two shots for the Shootout win.
After the weekend, the Lions have a record of 0-5-1 on the season. They will continue to look for their first win of the season in Merrimack, on Oct. 25th and 26th.
