Women’s hockey is coming off an exhibition shootout win over Bemidji State last weekend, looking to find their first win of the season against Merrimack College.
Friday night’s game saw the Warriors take an early lead against the Lions with a goal at 4:01 of the first. Then at 14:39, the Warriors scored again to make it 2-0. The Lions could not find the back of the net in the opening period. The Warriors outshot the Lions 12-10 in the period.
Around the four-minute mark into the second, the Lions would get on the board with a goal by Sidney Jackel, assisted by Quinn McLaren and Chloe Corbin. The Warriors, however, would score again to regain their two-goal lead at 16:45 on the power play. The Warriors would take the 3-1 lead into the third period and outshot the Lions 12-9 in the period.
The Lions would not be able to find the back of the net for the rest of the game, and the Warriors would find the net two more times in the third to make the final score 5-1. Both teams had seven shots in the final period of play. For the game, the Warriors would outshoot the Lions 31-26. Lions goalie Madison Bowtell would save 26 of the 31 shots she faced in the loss.
Game two of the weekend against the Warriors again saw the Lions fall behind early in the game. 12:47 into the opening period the Warriors would score, and then with 47 seconds left in the period, on the power play, they would score again. After the first, the score was 2-0 in favor of the Warriors, but the Lions did outshoot the Warriors 14-7 in the period.
The second did not get any better for the Lions. At 11:19 the Warriors would score again to make it 3-0. That would end up being the only goal of the second period, and the Warriors outshot Lindenwood 10-8 in the 2nd period.
Just over four minutes into the third, at 4:03 the Lions would get on the board. Again, the goal would be scored by Jackel. With five minutes left in the period, the Warriors would score again and put the game away. The Lions would lose 4-1. The Lions outshot the Warriors 16-5 in the final period and 38-22 for the game, despite the loss. Bowtell stopped 18 shots out of 22 faced in the loss.
With both losses over the weekend, the Lions now fall to 0-7-1 on the season. The season will continue on Friday, Nov. 1st and 2nd when they take on Mercyhurst University at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
