On Friday night the Lindenwood Lions began a two-game series with the Robert Morris Colonials in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. The Lions came into this series with a record of 2-4-0, while the Colonials came in with a record of 2-1-1.
In the first period of game one, both teams were held scoreless with a total of 18 shots on goal in the period between both teams, as the Lions outshot the Colonials 11-7.
The second period almost stayed scoreless as well, but at 16:13 of the period that changed. The Colonials scored an even-strength goal to make it 1-0, carrying that lead into the third period of play. The Lions outshot the Colonials 17-12 in the second.
The Colonials would find the back of the net quickly into the third period, scoring at 1:24 to make the score 2-0. With 34 seconds left in the third period, the Colonials would add an empty net goal to secure the 3-0 lead and win. The Lions outshot the Colonials 9-4 in the period and 37-23 for the game in the loss. Lions goalie Owen Bartoszkiewicz stopped 20 of the 23 shots that he faced in the loss.
Game two of the series took place on Saturday night. The Lions found a way to hit the back of the net in the opening period of the game, with a goal scored at 16:15 by Brody Mortensen, assisted by both Thomas Jarman and Tyler Loughman. That goal for Mortensen was his first as a Lion. The Lions would take that 1-0 lead into the second period, outshooting the Colonials 16-4 in the period.
The Lions would net their second goal of the game at 4:02 of the second period on the power play. The goal was scored by Jack Anderson, assisted by Jarman and Kristof Papp to give the Lions a 2-0 lead. Four minutes later, the Colonials would score a goal to cut the lead in half. The Lions took a 2-1 lead into the third period, once again outshooting the Colonials 13-8 in the second period.
The third period saw only one goal scored, and it was by the Colonials to tie the game on the power play. With the game tied at two after regulation overtime was needed. The Lions outshot the Colonials 8-5 in the third period of play.
In overtime, both teams could not find the back of the net, meaning the game would end in a 2-2 tie. In overtime, the Colonials outshot the Lions 4-2, but the Lions owned the shot total for the game 39-21. Lions goalie Alexandros Aslanidis stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced in the tie.
With the loss and the tie this past weekend, the Lions now sit with a record of 2-5-1 on the season. Next up for the Lions is a huge test, taking on number one ranked Denver Nov. 8th and 9th in Denver, Colorado.
