On Friday, Mar. 21, and Saturday, Mar. 22, the Lindenwood men’s golf team hosted their home invitational at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Club, at Weldon Springs, Mo.
The Lions finished first in the tournament amongst all six teams. According to junior Sam Emrick, the team wasn’t quite able to pull off the score they were shooting for, but were able to show superb improvement both in the invitational and season as a whole.
“Our score [we got] wasn’t what we were shooting for, but we battled back today after not being in the lead coming in,” Emrick said. “The guys grinded it out, they got the job done, and it’s onto the next.”
Since Lindenwood men’s golf entered Division 1, things have been significantly different for the Lions, with the team being smaller in recent years and competition becoming tighter. However, through thick and thin, the players have persevered, allowing themselves to develop more and more each time they are on the course. Lindenwood is confident in a strong finish to the regular season, and doing even better in the OVC Championship.
“It’s definitely moving in the right direction,” senior Mackenzie Holmes said. “We started off not on the best foot, but we’re definitely trending in a positive manner, and now it’s just about building on this and making sure that we finish the season strong.”
Regardless of how the rest of the season turns out for the Lions, as the team has adapted through Division 1 over the years, the program has flourished both this season and as a whole. They are looking to continue to climb that ladder higher and higher, and even gain more athletes, as the team enhances.
“We got some transfers coming in, we’re losing five seniors for next year,” Emrick said. “It’s going to be a tough loss with those guys leaving, but we’re getting some internationals coming overseas to come play, be a Lion. So we plan to get them in the right direction and move toward future goals.”
