Lindenwood field hockey went 2-1 over the weekend with a 2-1 loss to Limestone College on Friday, a 3-1 win against Newberry College on Sunday, and a 5-0 win against Converse College on Monday.
In the matchup against Limestone, the Lions outshot the Saints 15-11, and put 10 shots on goal to the Saints’ four. Freshman Pauline Terwindt led the attack for the Lions, firing seven shots with four on goal. Junior Bridget Hoogendijk scored the only goal of the contest for the Lions in the 38th minute for her sixth goal of the season.
For Limestone, the damage was done by way of two second half goals scored by freshman Gwen Lewis and sophomore Kelly Diplock. Diplock’s goal was the goal that gave the Saints the lead with under 20 minutes to go in the game.
Lions goalkeeper senior Skylar Starbeck made one save but allowed both Saints’ goals.
Hoogendijk kept the goals coming for the Lions in their 3-1 win over Newberry. Junior Noor Fons started the scoring for the Lions, picking up a goal in the 12th minute. The rest was done by Hoogendijk, who scored two more goals to bring her season total to eight.
The Lions fired 15 total shots with 12 being on net in the win. Fons and junior Jessie Londono each tallied assists in the game and remain tied for the team lead with four each.
Head coach Sarah Baumann made it a focal point to be more aggressive than they were the last time they ran up against Newberry, Sept. 23 at home.
“We focused on being more aggressive with 50/50 balls and having better effort to own our play compared to our matchup with them last weekend,” Baumann said. “The win is awesome to come away with, but we are always focused on getting better as a team in each game and putting together a full game of quality hockey.”
Starbeck, freshman Emily Deines, and junior Mackenzie Litterst all saw time in net in the Lions’ win against the Wolves Sunday.
“We were excited for all three of our goalies to get some quality time in the game as well, making some great saves and working with our defensive unit,” Baumann said.
Against Converse, the offense was firing on all cylinders. Hoogendijk continued to show how well she can find the net and scored two more goals in the contest, bringing her season total to 10, and her career total to 30, which is third all-time at Lindenwood. Junior Megan Martin made her presence known as well by scoring her first two goals of the season. Sophomore Shelby Pierson scored another goal for the Lions to complete the 5-0 shutout.
Litterst got the start in goal and played all 70 minutes for the Lions. She recorded three saves on her way to her first shutout of the season.
The Lions next game is Saturday, Oct. 6 at home against Bellarmine University at 6 p.m.
