Lindenwood women’s basketball (17-7, 13-2 OVC) runs their win streak to eight consecutive games after a 68-61 over the Morehead State Eagles (8-17, 3-12 OVC) on Thursday night.
The Lions have their longest win streak in program history at eight games, and the longest since the 2018-19 season when they had seven in a row. They have now also won 11 of their last 12 and stay tied atop the OVC standings with Tennessee Tech.
Mya Skoff tied her career high with 20 points on 7/13 shooting including 3/5 from three-point range while also grabbing four rebounds.
Justis Odom and Brooke Coffey each tallied 11 points in the win. Odom hauled in nine rebounds and shot 5/7 from the foul line while Coffey did a little bit of everything grabbing four rebounds, dishing out four assists and swiping two steals.
Turnovers were an issue for Lindenwood as they turned it over 21 times leading to 14 Eagles points while the Eagles turned it over 16 times leading to 18 points for the Lions.
Both teams got off to hot starts in the first quarter trading baskets, before a Michelle Ugwah jumper tied the game at 11-11 halfway through the first quarter. Lindenwood’s offense would find a spark late in the quarter and go on a 13-2 run capped off by a pair of Gracy Wernli free throws to give the Lions a 24-13 lead after one quarter of play.
Morehead State would respond to open the second quarter going on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to three after a Harley Paynter jumper. Lindenwood would be held to one point throught the first 6:15 of the second quarter before Ellie Brueggemann connected on a three to spark a 13-2 run to give the Lions a comfortable 38-23 halftime lead. Wernli led the way with eight points while Coffey had seven in the opening half of play.
Lindenwood turned the ball over five times to start the third quarter and Morehead State was able to capitalize going on a 16-2 run to cut the lead to lead to one at 40-39 with 2:03 left following a Katie Dike free throw. Lindenwood was held to two points through the first eight minutes of action in the second half and opened up the quarter shooting 1/12 before finally a Skoff three pointer and a pair of Odom free throws were able to help salvage the quarter and keep a 45-41 lead headed into the final quarter of play.
Skoff took control in the fourth scoring 11 of her 20 points in the quarter as the Lions outscored the Eagles 23-20 in the final quarter. Morehead State would get within four at 51-47 but Lindenwood would fend off any last minute miracles by the Eagles and win 68-61.
Lindenwood stays home for a nationally televised game on ESPNU against Southern Indiana at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15.
