The Lions men’s ACHA Division I hockey team split a two-game series against the No. 6 seeded Iowa State University Cyclones this weekend at the Wentzville Ice Arena.

The Saturday night game started at 7 p.m., and period one ended without any scoring from either side. During the second period, Lindenwood scored its only goal of the game at the 5:55 mark, as captain Michael Lozano scored, and it was assisted by Alexander Carlsson and Cade Owad.

The Cyclones tied the game in the third period and forced the game into overtime, which remained scoreless and pushed the game to a shootout. Lindenwood’s Tommy Heinzman scored Lindenwood’s single goal in the shootout, leaving the Lions to fall 2-1 against the Cyclones. The Cyclones only had 15 shots on goal compared to Lindenwood’s 29 shots on goal throughout the game, according to the ACHA website.

Lindenwood’s second game of the weekend series kicked off at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, at the Wentzville Ice Arena.

Lindenwood opened the scoring early in the first period at 4:59 with defenseman Jake Townsend’s first goal of the game, assisted by Aapo Nurminen and Tommy Heinzman.

The second period commenced with no scoring from the Cyclones, and a goal with 4:51 left by defenseman Austin Wilk from Alexander Carlsson gave the Lions a 2-0 lead.

At 13:00 in the second period, Towsend scored a goal after being set up on the play by Heinzman to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.

The Cyclones scored twice in the third period, bringing the game to the final score of 3-2.

“It was a good game for us and interesting during the last half,” sophomore forward Jordan Klimovsky said.

Their were four penalties that occurred in the third period, split by Lindenwood and Iowa State.

The Lions will play the University of Oklahoma at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20,  and again at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Wentzville Ice Arena.
