Student Involvement Director Angie Royal spoke about how groups should pass on information to new officers as part of the Spring Leadership Series on Tuesday.
“Passing the Torch: Transitioning Officers” was held at 4 p.m. in Harmon 131.
- A smooth transition provides continuity, allows groups to continue their momentum and allows leaders to pass on knowledge and expertise to their successors. Royal said that if organizations do not ensure that incoming officers know what they are doing, the organization may lose its success and fall apart.
- Student organization officers should make the transition an ongoing process. Royal said they should delegate some responsibility to good leaders to prepare them for leadership.
- Next year’s officers should be chosen by the end of spring semester so current officers can meet with them. Incoming and outgoing officers should talk about their goals for next year, membership, recruitment, operation and what they learned from this year’s successes and failures, Royal said.
- It is helpful to prepare a transition binder containing anything incoming officers need to know about running the organization, including outgoing officer contact info.
- Officers must be transitioned in InvolveU by June 1.
During the event, attendees recieved handouts about transitioning officers and discussed their experience in small groups and with Royal.
The next installment of the leadership series, “A Toxic Workplace: The Ultimate Result of Dark Side Leadership” will be led by Bob Cote, a management professor, on April 17.
This is the eighth story in a series covering the leadership sessions offered on campus. Check back each week for updates.
