The third annual Kilometers for Chris will take place Sunday April 27. The event is held in to offer financial and emotional support of Chris Lister, a Lindenwood University alumnus who was struck by a car in 2012 during a 10K race, and his family. Lister was severely injured and has been recovering ever since, making progress daily. To learn more about Chris’ progress visit https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/christopherlister.

The event is sponsored by the Lindenwood University Recreation Administration Department and coordinated by students in the Recreation Program Planning class. It was started in 2012 when one of Lister’s friends, Amanda Price, approached the recreation department. Recreation Administration Department Chair, Joseph Lister, was part of the department at the time.

“After brainstorming with her and the students in the REC 36200 Program Planning and Marketing course, the concept of the race became the outcome,” Lister said.

Lovell, who is also an assistant professor in the program, said this event benefits the students as well as the Lister family.

“One of our graduates from last year was hired by a local community park and recreation department and her first duty was to create a 5K race,” Lister said. “Her experience coordinating the Kilometers for Chris was invaluable to her.”

This year’s race will be run differently in the past.

“The race itself is a modified 5K,” said Recreation Program Planning class member, Abby Sturmer. “It’s a team challenge race [of teams of four to five people], with team building events every kilometer.”

The event will also include a one mile fun run for those who don’t wish to participate in the team challenge.

The course will begin at Lindenwood’s Roemer Hall and runs through the entire campus ending in Hunter Stadium. A full course map is shown in the graphic below.  kiloroute.jpg

Teams will consist of 4-5 people that will be challenged to different obstacles during the run. Participants can sign up at lindenwood.edu/kilometersforchris. Race day registration is available to those who missed the online registration deadline. Volunteers are welcome to attend.
