“This is the first time we’ve done something for Sibley Day,” said Sammi Glenn vice president of the Lindenwood Swing Dance Club. “It’s really a special event because it’s the first time we’ve had a live band.”

About 30 students participated in today’s event. Cynthia Matlock an active student in the swing dance club since October said “that they are always so helpful teaching.” The first half of the event was a teaching session led by Dr. Cynthia Wooldridge a professor at Lindenwood and the staff advisor of the Swing Dance Club.

Dr. Wooldridge showed students basic steps of swing, walking the students through by pairing them up with veteran students and those who had no experience dancing. After teaching the students the basics that they needed to dance students were given time for free dance switching up partners and just getting used to the style of dancing without any strings attached.

Garret Beckham shared what he liked about the club. “I enjoy the swing dance club because it gives students like myself the opportunity to learn how to dance and meet other people.”

The sentiment was mirrored by President Ryan Etheridge who said “My favorite part about swing dance club is seeing people come in not knowing anything about dancing and after a few weeks looking like they’ve swung for their whole life. It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and get out there and learn how to dance.”

Lindenwood Swing Dance Club meetings take place every Tuesday at 9 PM in the group fitness room in the basement of Evan’s commons. “Show up when you can, it’s non-committal and leave when you need to.”
