New Orleans hosted the Super Bowl at the Caesars Superdome, which featured the NFC champions the Philadelphia Eagles defeating the AFC champions the Kansas City Chiefs.
For the Kansas City Chiefs, they were looking to be the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls. For the Philadelphia Eagles, they were looking to defeat the Chiefs in a rematch of Super Bowl 57, two years prior.
Before the start of the game, Kansas City won the coin toss and chose to kick the ball off to start the Super Bowl. The game began with both teams punting on each of their first drives. But on the third drive of the game, and second for the Eagles, Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts executed a quarterback sneak on the Chiefs’ one-yard line, giving the Eagles their first touchdown and score of the game, as kicker Jake Elliot would complete the extra point, putting the team up 7-0.
The next drive would feature the Kansas City punting, then the Eagles finishing the first quarter with the ball still in their possession. But just under a minute into the second quarter, Hurts would throw an interception from the Chiefs 30-yard line to the two-yard line. After Kansas City regained possession, however, they still could not make a first down, finding themselves having to punt once again. After the Eagles would get the ball back, they would eventually strike the game’s first field goal of the night.
As the Chiefs returned on offense, after back-to-back sacks and now at 3rd and 16, Kansas City would attempt a pass play. That pass ended up being intercepted by defensive back Cooper DeJean and became a 38-yard pick-six, putting Philadelphia up 17-0.
The next two drives would result in both teams punting, but just one play into the Chiefs having the ball back, quarterback Patrick Mahomes would be intercepted for the second time of the game, with Zack Braun on the pick. After two plays of the drive, Jalen Hurts would find wide receiver AJ Brown in the end zone on a 12-yard touchdown, putting the Eagles up 24-0.
As Kansas City would get the ball back, they would wind up having to do their 5th punt of the game. With 25 seconds left in the first half, Philadelphia would run the clock out, as the half would conclude with the Philadelphia Eagles leading the Kansas City Chiefs 24-0. The second biggest Super Bowl half-time lead in history, and the biggest since Super Bowl 21, in which the Washington Redskins led the Denver Broncos by 25 points, 35-10.
When both teams headed to their respective locker rooms at the half, famous actor Samuel L. Jackson opened the Super Bowl 59 halftime show as “Uncle Sam”, and introduced famous rap artist Kendrick Lamar to the stage. Lamar would also perform alongside SZA during the show, as they would perform the songs ‘Luther’ from Lamar’s latest album ‘GNX’, and ‘All The Stars’ from 2018’s Black Panther Soundtrack. Retired tennis superstar Serena Williams would dance along to Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’ song during the show as well.
As the second half would begin, the Eagles would kick-off to the Chiefs to start the half off on offense. Kansas City would eventually punt on that drive, giving the ball back to Philadelphia, who would eventually increase their lead with a field goal, 27-0. As Kansas City would get the ball back, they would eventually drive down to the middle of the field, at their 47-yard line. But
on a 4th & 4, the Chiefs would decide to attempt a first down play but would be unsuccessful, giving possession back to the Eagles. On the very first play of the drive for the Eagles, Jalen Hurts would find wide receiver DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard touchdown. Philadelphia would go up 34-0.
As Kansas City would get the ball back, just five plays into the drive, Patrick Mahomes would find rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy in the end zone, for the Chiefs’ first score of the game. Kansas City would go for a two-point conversion attempt after the touchdown but would be unsuccessful. The Chiefs would then trail the Eagles 34-6. Kansas City would kick off to Philadelphia, but with 29 seconds left in the third quarter, Philadelphia would get only one playoff in the remainder of the quarter.
Starting the fourth quarter, the Eagles would eventually settle with a field goal, increasing their lead to 37-6. As Philadelphia would kickoff to Kansas City, the Chiefs would start their first possession of the drive with a fumble, as defensive linemen Milton Williams and Jalen Carter would strip-sack Patrick Mahomes, and Milton finished with the recovery.
The Eagles would soon settle for another field goal, as their lead would then go up to 40-6. As Kansas City would get the ball back, the Chiefs would drive down the field to get their second touchdown of the game, with Patrick Mahomes finding wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins for a 7-yard touchdown pass. Kansas City would also have a successful 2-point conversion with Patrick Mahomes finding wide receiver Justin Watson in the endzone, cutting the score to 40-14.
The Chiefs would try an onside kick to get the ball back but would be unsuccessful. With 2:54 left in the game, the Eagles would just focus on running out the clock. After an unsuccessful fourth down conversion, Kansas City would come back on offense. On the first play of the drive, Mahomes would find Worthy on a 50-yard touchdown pass for Worthy’s second touchdown of the game, as Mahomes would also find Hopkins in the endzone for a second successful two-point conversion, making the score 40-22.
The Chiefs would try another onside kick afterward, but it would be yet again unsuccessful, as the Eagles would run out the clock to finish off the game. The Philadelphia Eagles would ultimately win their second Super Bowl in franchise history, and their second in eight years.
