On a beautiful sunny Wednesday afternoon with not a cloud in the sky and slight breeze flowing through Harlen C. Hunter stadium the Lindenwood women’s lacrosse team (9-4, 2-2 ASUN) looked to snap their two game losing streak against the Vanderbilt Commodores (7-8, 2-3 AAC).
Unfortunately for Lindenwood, they fell 20-6 to Vandy giving them their third straight loss on the season after starting the season 9-1in what was an uncharacteristic showing from the Lions.
Alissa DiGiacinto racked up three goals in the loss while Breylin Bright, Reese Kreiger and Tatum Bryant each netted a goal. Luci Selander was held out of the goal column but still managed three assists.
Elizabeth Goth got the start in the cage for the Lions and took the loss giving up eight goals while making only two saves in the first quarter before being relieved by Aislinn Sweeney who performed admirably in the final three quarters of play only allowing 12 goals while making 11 saves.
Lindenwood was held to season lows in goals, shots, shots on goal and free position shots as the Commodore defense was swarming all day as they forced 16 turnovers and won more draw controls than Lindenwood 16-13.
Vandy jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before DiGiacinto was able to shake free from her defender and Selander was able to feed the ball to her allowing her to rip a top shelf shot past Commodore goalie, Molly Joyce. Vanderbilt would finish off the first quarter with another trio of scores giving the Commodores a massive 8-1 lead and a lead they would only continue to build upon.
Vandy would take a 14-4 lead into the halftime break as it was all Commodores in the opening 30 minutes not letting the Lions gain any momentum to try and mount any comeback.
Tatum Bryant opened the scoring in the third quarter, assisted by Selander and DiGiacinto would finish off her hat trick later in the frame, making the score 15-6 but Vandy would score the final five goals of the match as Emme Martin would come in for Joyce in the cage for Vandy and pick up five saves in a shutout of the Lions in the final frame.
Lindenwood will look to snap their three game skid as they welcome Stetson to town for senior day on Saturday April 19 with first draw set for 12:00 p.m.
