Rarely does a winning team get outshot from three-point range by 28 percent but that is what happened Thursday night in Hays, Kan. The Fort Hays State (11-3, 3-3 MIAA) men’s basketball team beat Lindenwood (8-9, 3-4 MIAA) 70-61 while going four-for-16, and shooting 25 percent from beyond the arc.

Fort Hays’ 70 points is 12 points less than its per game average. The Tigers defense also outperformed its normal numbers holding LU to 11 points less then it usually surrenders.

“Well our defense has gotten better the last three games, but you know I never, I’m a sore loser I guess,” LU men’s head coach Brad Soderberg said. “I think with a defensive effort like that I expected us to have a better result.”

Soderberg said until his team executes consistently in all circumstances it will be hard for them to win game’s like Thursday’s.

LU shot 53 percent from deep, and 38 from the floor compared to Fort Hays State’s 47 percent field goal percentage.

The Lions had 13 turnovers resulting in 15 Fort Hays points. Ten of Lindenwood’s turnovers came during the first half.

The paint was also unkind to LU. The Tigers outscored the Lions 36-22 inside. Fort Hays also took advantage of the fast break. They scored eight points in transition while holding LU scoreless on fast breaks.

One bright spot for Lindenwood was its bench. They scored 23 points.

The Lions are off this weekend. They play next when visit Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo. this coming Wednesday.
