Fireworks displays could prevail despite heavy rainfall forecast for this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The St. Louis metro area is expected to be the focus for several rounds of showers and thunderstorms from Saturday through Sunday night, said Charlie Kelly, a meteorologist with the weather service in Weldon Spring.

Locations north of Interstate 44 in Missouri are expected to receive the heaviest rainfall — likely 3 to 5 inches — starting Saturday.

Heavy rainfall could result in the flooding of low-lying areas, and flash flooding will also be possible on smaller creeks and streams.

In regards to fireworks, Kelly said there is a “glimmer of hope” for Monday evening. The area is expected to receive most of its rainfall over the weekend and Monday morning, leaving a 50 to 60 percent chance for firework shows to still occur, according to Kelly.
