Men’s soccer defeats Missouri S&T

After a 1-1 draw against University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday night, the Lions faced Missouri S&T in Rolla, defeating them 2-1 in extra time. LU was determined to earn the first win of the season and took control of the match very fast. They moved the ball forward and attacked far in Missouri’s half.
Consequentially, a Missouri defender lost the ball in the box and Andre Hayne scored out of 10 yards to give the Lions the lead after 26 minutes, which has also been the half-time score. The Lions ended up with 10 shots and 8 fouls, which proves that LU was the more active team in the first half.
In the second half, the Lions took it a little easier without losing the focus on defending the own box. LU kept dangerous through counterattacks. Missouri S&T tried to tie the match but was unable to create dangerous possibilities except for a shot of Ryan Lawhead in the 78th minute which was blocked by the Lions’ defense. However, the Lions kept dangerous and had two good possibilities through Andre Hayne to expand the lead.
Missouri S&T received a free kick next to the box in the 89th minute which was used by Ryan Lawhead in order to tie the match one minute before it was over.
With the beginning of the overtime, LU tried everything to gain the lead a second time in the match. Missouri S&T were encircled by Lions’ offense which attempted to score the second goal seven times in the first nine minutes of the overtime.
With the eight shot in the 99th minute, the Lions’ decided the match. Andre Hayne gave an accurate pass on the wing to Alfredo Paez who finished from 10 yards.
The Lions finished with 20 shots; six of them were on the goal, four corner kicks and with 25 fouls, which forced three yellow cards. The next men’s soccer game is scheduled for September 10 against Maryville University in St. Louis.
