Women’s Basketball drops home opener to Emporia State in double overtime

The Lions fell short to the Emporia State Lady Hornets by a final score of 103-102 in double overtime on Wednesday night.

The Lions shot 45% from the field in the first half, with 34 of their points being in the paint. Senior forward Ellen McCorkle and Julia Ruzevich both scored 11 points in the half. 

Senior guard Devin Fuhring blocked a shot and gave it off to sophomore guard Gracie Neff who hit a layup right before the buzzer.  The score at the half was 46-45 in favor of Emporia State. 

The Lions continued to shoot 44% in field goals and 40% in three-point shooting in the third quarter. 

The game remained close in the fourth quarter. Senior Hennessy Handy scored a layup to make the score 79-77 with less than 20 seconds left in the game. 

Handy then produced a steal with 15 seconds left, which led to two free throws she sank to tie the game at 79-79.

The Lions once again showed dominance on defense at the end of regulation with a blocked shot by Handy, taking the game into overtime. 

The team continued to play solid defense, producing two blocks in the last 20 seconds of the game. Ruzevich scored a layup to tie the game 90-90, causing a second overtime, 

McCorkle scored another layup within less than a minute left in the second overtime, bringing the score to 99-98. Henry also scored a layup and forced a turnover with less than 20 seconds left. 

McCorkle again scored to give the Lions a one-point lead with seven seconds left, but Emporia State stole the lead off of a layup, ending the game at 103-102. 

Ruzevich ended the game with a double-double, scoring 29 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, four steals, and two blocks. McCorkle followed behind her with a double-double as well, scoring 22 points, 12 rebounds, and two assists. Fuhring produced 16 points and four assists, and Handy had 12 points and three blocks. 

The Lions will go on the road to face Pittsburg State on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at 5:30 pm.
