Logan Seibert set Lindenwood’s all-time career field goal, as the junior drilled 5 field goals from 34, 21, 37, 22, and 27 yards, giving him 41 for his career, in a 29-14 win over Charleston Southern.
Seibert passed Halley Ferrell (2006-08) who made 40 in his Lindenwood football career. Seibert’s two field goals in the first half helped Lindenwood build up a 20-14 lead at the break and provided the only scoring for either team in the second half.
The Lindenwood defense also was a huge factor in the Lions win. They held the Charleston Southern Buccaneers scoreless in the second half and didn’t allow an offensive touchdown all game. The first score for the Bucs came on a 28-yard pick-six off Nate Glantz courtesy of Trayson Fowler. The only other touchdown came on the following drive, when the Lions were trying to shake off the previous pick-six and build up their 20-7 lead when Glantz rolled to his left out of the pocket and elected to tuck the ball and run, but got walloped, and fumbled. Charleston Southern scooped it up and took it back for six more.
The Lions’ defense held the Buccaneers to 197 total yards, 1 for 12 on third down, and only allowed eight first downs the entire game. The defense for Lindenwood also forced four takeaways, two interceptions, and two fumbles. Interceptions were courtesy of both Jaylan Wesley and Jayden Patrick. Throughout the game, the defense was flying all over the field. They showed off their speed and coverage ability, wreaked havoc in the backfield, and never allowed the Buccaneers’ star running back, Autavius Ison to get going, as he finished with 77 yards on 14 carries.
The Lions’ offense did its part to stay ahead and keep the game out of reach of any comeback opportunities. Glantz led seven scoring drives in the game, and finished 12 for 25 with 152 passing yards, 103 rushing yards, an interception, and a fumble. But those turnovers were costly as both led to defensive scores for Charleston Southern. Cortezz Jones finished with 54 yards on 18 carries and had both touchdowns for Lindenwood on the day.
The first came on a one-yard run, after a pick by the LU defense early in the first quarter. The second came on a two-yard run midway through the second quarter. Jeff Caldwell was the Lions’ leading receiver, a week after having four touchdowns. This week, he tallied two catches for 52 yards. Reece Thomas led the team in receptions with five catches, for 44 yards. The Lions only threw the ball 25 times, as once they were firmly in the lead they used their offensive line to pound the ball down the field to drain the clock and secure the victory.
With this win, Lindenwood improved to 3-4 overall, and 2-1 in the OVC-Big Sky conference. They will be back on the road next week as they head to Gardner-Webb (1-5, 0-2) on Oct. 19 in North Carolina, before returning home for the annual homecoming game on Oct. 26 as the Lions play host to Western Illinois.
