The Lindenwood Lions Hockey (6-17-2) team traveled to South Bend Indiana to take on the Fighting Irish (8-16-1) on Friday night. The Lions won the game 3-2 giving the Lions one of their biggest wins in program history.
The game started slow for the Lions because, at 5:46 of the first period, the Fighting Irish got on the board with a goal by Carter Slaggert, his third of the season. Then soon after that goal, Notre Dame would find the back of the net again. At 6:44 Hunter Strand would score his seventh goal of the season. At the end of the first period, the Fighting Irish had a lead over Lindenwood 2-0. The Fighting Irish outshot the Lions 8-7 in the opening frame.
The second period is when the tides started to turn in Lindenwood’s favor. On a great unassisted effort, the Lions got on the board almost halfway through the second period. The goal was scored by defenseman Noah Houle at 8:40 of the period. Soon after the Lions would tie the game on another goal by Houle, his third of the season, assisted by Joe Prouty and Kristof Papp at 14:43. The Lions would then look for the lead, and eventually they would get it. At 17:49 Tyler Loughman would find the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season and give the lead to the Lions. David Gagnon and Brody Mortenson would get the assists on the go-ahead goal. Lindenwood would take the 3-2 lead into the final period. The Fighting Irish outshot the Lions 10-8 in the second period.
The third period saw both teams stay off the score sheet meaning that the Lions would pick up a huge 3-2 win. The Fighting Irish would outshot the Lions 10-4 in the final period for a total of 28-19 for the game. This is one of the biggest wins in Division-I history for the Lions.
With the win the Lions picked up their sixth win of the season improving their record to 6-17-2. The Lions will try to stun the Fighting Irish again tomorrow night at 5 p.m. in South Bend, Indiana, or live on Peacock.
