On a rainy and wet Saturday afternoon, the Lindenwood women’s lacrosse team (10-4, 3-2 ASUN) snapped their three game losing streak with an 18-12 win over the Stetson Hatters (5-10, 0-6 ASUN).
The win not only snapped the brief skid but also was special as postgame the team celebrated their six seniors: Aislinn Sweeney, Isabella Rulapaugh, Andie McConnell, Breylin Bright, Emily Mowbray and Olivia Tighe albeit and sent them out with a win following their last game at Hunter Stadium.
Luci Selander led the offense, exploding for five goals and an assist. Her most goals in a game since she had since she had five vs Coastal Carolina.
Reese Krieger and Alissa DiGiacinto each netting four goals with DiGiacinto also tallying an assist. Ryleigh Cavanaugh was the final Lion with multiple goals racking up three to go along with two assists and five draw controls.
Sweeney was back to her dominant self in goal making 14 saves and only allowing 12 goals on the afternoon.
Both teams had to wait to get this match underway as lightning in the area delayed the start for about a half hour but once both teams were ready to start play the Lions roared to life outsourcing Stetson 6-1 in the first 15 minutes. Selander and DiGiacinto each ripping a pair of goals with the only Hatter goal coming way of Sam King.
Selander got her hat trick early in the second before Stetson cut the lead back to four at 8-4 with 9:36 left in the second before back-to-back goals from Cavanaugh extended the lead to six at 10-4. The Hatters got two back on the Lions before Selander and DiGiacinto teamed up to score their own pair as Lindenwood took a 12-7 lead into the locker room.
After Katie Kornacki got the scoring started in the second half for the Hatters before Selander netted her 53rd goal of the year followed up by a goal from Tatum Bryant to grow Lindenwood’s lead back to six at 14-8. Lindenwood would take a 16-10 lead into the final 15 minutes after DiGiacinto and Kriger were able to find the back of the cage after another Hatter goal from Kornacki.
Lindenwood would extend their lead to the largest it had been at seven after goals from Bright and Krieger at 17-10, and 18-11 as the Lions buckled down defensively and never let the Hatters get within five as they were able to close out an 18-12 senior day win.
Lindenwood closes the regular season next Saturday April 26 with a road trip to Queens University of Charlotte with a chance to clinch a spot in the ASUN conference tournament with a win with the first draw coming at 11:00 a.m.
