Week five has brought trades from across the UFL the likes that we have not seen before in the league.
First, we saw Jason Bean get demoted from starting QB for Louisville to backup for Jordan Ta’amu in D.C. after his first win, then Dorian Thompson-Robinson getting traded out with Matt Corral on the Stallions to take his starting job. With all these moves though, it was left to wonder, will St. Louis be looking in the direction of a new play caller?
While it is no surprise that St. Louis has had some trouble under center, people were still holding out hope that Harrison Frost just needed to get out of his first game jitters and get comfortable in the starting role.
It seems like St. Louis is not willing to wait though as they made a massive trade today in the QB role bringing in one of the most prolific spring football players around. This first broke from James Larsen on X where the Dallas Renegades would trade the “Spring King” Quarterback Luis Perez to St. Louis in return for offensive lineman Corey Stewart. Anthony Miller who is a reporter at the UFL News Hub shared comments from both coaches on the trade situation.
Coach Proehl: “With our current injury situation, it was important to add depth at the quarterback position, and this move accomplishes that. We are fortunate to add a veteran with Luis experience to our room. Harrison Frost remains our starter, and we appreciate Corey’s contributions and wish him the best as he steps into an opportunity to start in Dallas.”
Dallas Coach Neuheisel: “This was a move prompted by Luis. We have a great deal of respect for him and wanted to find a place for him to play. At the same time, it provided us an opportunity to shore up our offensive line, given some mid-year bumps and bruises that are accumulated. We are happy to have Corey and wish Luis the very best.”
Perez has played in a lot of iterations of spring football including the former leagues that make up the UFL now. For the XFL he played for the LA Wildcats, New York Guardians, Vegas Vipers, and the Arlington Renegades where he would win the championship in 2023. For the USFL he only had one stop and that was with the New Jersey Generals.
With all this experience and a championship in the scene it is looking like that he could get the starting job sooner rather than later, but with week five games quickly approaching and playoffs not a certain, St. Louis has to make a decision to either trust in its young quarterback or to go with the Spring King veteran.
The Battlehawks next game is against the Orlando Storm on April 25 at 6 p.m. at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida or on the ESPN Network.
