This month and the last have featured major events related to the Spanish-speaking world and beyond.

On April 15, the Lindenwood Language Lab hosted its annual Hispanic Trivia Night.

“It went very well; many students came, and we played a lot of games,” junior Valeria Rosales said. “We organized more activities this time around; we played three different games and had various prizes for the students.”

The trivia night featured questions covering topics such as countries, general geography, history, sports, music, holidays, and food and drink. The event also offered popular Hispanic snacks, including churros, chips, salsa and small tortilla chips.

“A group of girls from the weightlifting team won, and they took home some gift cards,” Rosales said. “We plan to be even more open to the community in the future.”

Cinco de Mayo—the largest Mexican holiday celebrated in the United States—took place last Tuesday. However, Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated as widely in Mexico, as the holiday’s primary purpose is to celebrate Mexicans residing in the United States. Nevertheless, the holiday still commemorates Mexico’s victory in defeating France when the French attempted to invade the country.

“It is a celebration for immigrants living in the United States. They adopted it as a holiday to create a greater sense of home and belonging here through celebration,” junior Karenina Gutierrez said. “It serves as a way to celebrate their heritage, even when they are far from their families. Consequently, people in the U.S. have embraced that historical victory as a reason to celebrate even more.”

On that same day, the Hispanic Student Union announced its new officers for the 2026–2027 academic year. The new leadership consists of Sabrina Vargas as President, Hilda Campos as Vice President, Janalya Munoz as Secretary, Alondra Soto-Perez as Treasurer, and Brendan Burns as Head of Social Media.
