You read the title right, Bethesda has blessed us with a new(ish) Elder Scrolls title. At 10 A.M. Wednesday, April 22, Bethesda went live on their YouTube and opened with a brand-new trailer for the remaster, that has been rumored and leaked for years now, showing just a small taste of what was to come.
They would continue after the trailer to explain the history and the excitement towards this new project and bringing the life back to such a monumental entry into the Elder Scrolls franchise. They then showed how the remaster looks compared to its 2006 predecessor, and oh man is it gorgeous. Normally, The Elder Scrolls is made on The Creation Engine. This has made such iconic moments as climbing a mountain with a horse, or on the Fallout franchise, being rag dolled by a random mine. The remaster however, utilizes the new Unreal Engine 5 which such game like Fortnite and Black Myth: Wukong utilize.
With this comes a massive graphical overhaul and quality of life sustainment to help make replay ability as long as possible. Thanks to @SynthPotato over on X, we can also share some major details with the new remaster. This includes a new leveling system that is between Skyrim and Oblivion, fully remade visuals from the ground up, all animations remade, and it uses the Unreal Engine 5 visuals. On top of just the aesthetic though, they did bolster the gameplay experience. This will include all the original voice lines returning, new voices and dialogue recorded, sprinting is a new feature, combat has a dodge feature now, and lastly, but most importantly, all DLCs are included in the title.
Now, although Bethesda falls under the Xbox family, it has launched on all platforms. This shows not only Xbox’s commitment to a fair gaming community space, but also alleviates the worry that remasters of previous multi-platform titles might be a exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is available now on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. It is available for free through Xbox Game Pass or it is $50 for base game and $60 for the deluxe edition. If you own Game Pass you can buy a digital deluxe upgrade for $10, which will still allow you to download the game for free but spend less to get all the extra content with the deluxe edition.
