Even though the summer movie slate is coming to a close, and the titular film for the DCU being Superman coming in and doing well in the box office, James Gunn is not quite done teasing the “big blue boy scout”.
While the movie did better than some would have expected with the recent issues in the DC movie universe, it seems like his most recent summer blockbuster did well enough to warrant the announcement of a sequel just two months after the release of the original.
Around noon on Sept. 3rd, Gunn, David Corenswet (Superman/ Clark Kent), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor) all posted individually different artwork to their Instagrams with the simple caption of “Man of Tomorrow. In theatres July 9, 2027.” The artwork that all three posted does share a common theme, and that is Superman in his suit, either in an aggressive stance or casually leaning against his arch-rival.
Speaking of which, we do see Lex Luthor in this artwork as well, but in something that will be loved by every comic fan alive. They show Lex in his power armor that he is so notoriously known for throughout the comics in similar poses to his superhero counterpart.
On Sept. 4, James Gunn started his impromptu press tour talking about the new movie and he started by saying that he finished the initial script and was in the lengthy stage of rewriting and polishing it. Just a week after Gunn would then appear on The Howard Stern Show saying both that “Man of Tomorrow starts filming around April 2026” and that “Superman and Lex Luthor will work together to fight a ‘much bigger threat’ in ‘Man of Tomorrow.”
The latest news drop came this week on Monday, Sept. 22, with James Gunn posting a photo of the cover sheet of the newly finished script with the simple caption of “#MoT 7.9.27.” He would follow this up with an interview on the 24th where EW asked him if the “Man of Tomorrow” script photo teases Brainiac. His words were “Of course I wasn’t unaware that when I posted the cover of the script that there was going to be discussion around that particular topic. But I think we’ll hold off from what exactly is happening.”
If this new villain is Brainiac, that would make it the first appearance of the famous megalomaniac on the big screen in live action. He has appeared in live-action tv shows, most recently in ‘Superman and Lois;’ however, that was a different take from the comic character in that they made him another human instead of the god level intellect alien that he originally is. While he may not be as notable as Lex Luthor to most people, comic fans online are loving the attention that the new DC CEO is giving to the once over-saturated character and his deep cast of villains.
At this time, Superman: Man of Tomorrow is slated for a July 9, 2027, release date in theaters.
