Yes, the title is correct, and honestly, very jarring to think about for Xbox fans. Over the last few months, Xbox has slowly given away its long-raining “crown jewel” exclusives to PlayStation. It started with Forza Horizon 5 going to the competitor on April 29th, 2025, and the expectation that this would continue with future titles in the franchise. This has bothered a lot of Xbox fans because Forza was Xbox’s response to PlayStation’s exclusive racing simulator, Gran Turismo. This means that what PlayStation players can experience on the Xbox flagship, Xbox players do not get the same love in return. This would be followed up with the Gears of War: Reloaded going to PlayStation, with a trade-in return. Gears was released on all platforms on August 26th, but was overshadowed by Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox finally. While yes, another console exclusive was lost, the media cycle picked up the fact that a long-running live-service game was finally launching on their competitor after several years. Now that is just a small taste of Xbox’s approach to multi-platform publishing. However, nobody anticipated that Xbox would give up their true money maker.
This started whenever Halo announced on October 6th, 2024, that they were starting development on a new Halo title with a YouTube video called “A New Dawn.” They explained that they were getting away from the failed SlipSpace engine and moving to Unreal Engine 5. This would allow them to be more stable and have more visually aesthetic features going into the new title. They also showed new images for the first time, and people quickly noticed that it looked very reminiscent of the original Halo: Combat Evolved title. Well, fast forward to Halo Championship Series Worlds 2025, and they announced that on opening day, they would announce what their next big project would be. Now, the fan base was excited yet depressed at the same time. This is because Halo Studios said that it would be the final year of support and competition for Halo: Infinite. Now, they built a ton of hype about the new generation of Halo, but the reveal was very lackluster.
The day started with outlooks on the teams and what the matches were going to be, starting the tournament. Then the lights turned dim, and the Xbox logo appeared on the screen. Whether at home or in the venue, the trailer was finally here, and it looked very familiar. The trailer was only a minute and a half long; however, it left much to be desired from the fan base, as it was only a remake. Then the kicker was revealed as to why all they are doing is “remaking” the original. This will be the first Halo title to ever release on PlayStation consoles. This was something that was rumored and speculated over in the Xbox community for roughly a year, but seemed like such an out of pocket thought that it would never happen.
Now, while that is a bleak outlook on Xbox exclusivity, I do not think we should panic about Xbox’s future. Xbox is heading to a multi-platform model anyway with their partnership with ASUS. This started with the handheld, which, although it is Xbox-branded, is a portable PC handheld that can access PlayStation exclusives. This means that while Xbox is choosing to go multiplatform, they are forcing its competitors’ hands to do the same. So, while Halo leaving exclusivity is sad. I think this is the beginning of a much more united gaming front.
Halo Campaign Evolved launches in 2026 across all platforms, with no official launch date given just yet.
