This month at Lindenwood University featured Spanish events such as Las Fallas from March 15-19, although the Lindenwood Language Lab kept up their Las Fallas table up till Friday, March 20. On March 20, HSU also featured a Hispanic Student Union Hangout. That featured coffee and OJ pan Dulce.
Las Fallas is a five day festival in Valencía, Spain. It welcomes spring by combining art, satire, and tradition. Junior Laura Sanchez has been celebrating Las Fallas since I was three years old, until she moved here. But her family continues to celebrate them. She would dress up and march in the Ofrenda procession as a fallera the whole nine yards.
“The Vellas hold religious significance. Fundamentally, the practice involves offering flowers, which we consider to be our most valuable possession to the Virgin. These flowers are gathered fresh from the fields,” Sanchez said. “While the tradition certainly carries religious meaning, there is also another aspect to it: as a key part of the Fallas festival, it serves as a social pastime for the community, a festive occasion for the people, though the core religious significance remains the offering of flowers to the Virgin.”
In the past, there were many carpenters who used to burn the scraps left over from their work, leaving behind other items they no longer wanted. Consequently—and this is essentially the basis of one of the local legends—we now burn anything we wish to be rid of; nowadays, this often involves sculptures, political effigies, or similar objects that people simply want to leave behind. That is what inspired Las Fallas.
“Schools take their time with the festivities; they often have the entire week off, and sometimes even the week before that, spending two or three days celebrating Las Fallas right there within the school grounds,” Sanchez said. “This might involve activities such as arts and crafts or creating small monuments by hand. These celebrations take place throughout the school system, though not every single school in Valencia participates.”
With the Hispanic Student Union hangout that was held, they wanted to organize an informal event where people could drop by for a few minutes or an hour, simply to hang out. The most popular thing at the event was the pan dulce, which is a wide variety of Mexican sweet breads and pastries.

Este mes en la universidad de Lindenwood contaba con eventos de español inclusos Las Fallas del decimoquinto al diecinueve de Marzo, aunque el Laboratorio de Idiomas de Lindenwood mantuvo sus mesa de Las Fallas hasta el viernes, Veinte de Marzo. El veinte de marzo, la HSU también presentó un encuentro de la Unión de Estudiantes Hispanos, en el que se ofrecieron café, jugo de naranja y pan dulce.
Las Fallas es un festival de cinco días que se celebra en Valencia, España. Da la bienvenida a la primavera combinando arte, sátira y tradición. Laura Sánchez, estudiante de tercer año, celebró Las Fallas desde que teníatres años, hasta que se mudó aquí. Sin embargo, su familia continúa celebrándolo. Ella solía vestirse de fallera con todo lujo de detalles y desfilar en la procesión de la Ofrenda.
“Las Vellas tienen un significado religioso. Que trata ve básicamente ofrecerle floras que es lo que pensamos que es más valioso. Ofrendo la flores a una viente. Alavina alente caban de los sembrados,” Sanchez dija. “Entres sí tienen los significados religiosos, pero también ahí otra parte que es una de Fallas y comunidades siete pasatiempos como jinete fiesta, pero si a significado religioso que es de la florios ala vi.”
Antaño, muchos carpinteros solían quemar los retazos sobrantes de su trabajo, dejando atrás otros objetos que ya no deseaban. En consecuencia, y esto constituye, en esencia, el fundamento de una de las leyendaslocales, hoy en día quemamos cualquier cosa de la que deseamos deshacernos; actualmente, esto suele incluir esculturas, efigies políticas u objetos similares que la gente simplemente quiere dejar atrás. Eso es lo queinspiró Las Fallas.
“Las escuelas se toman su tiempo con las festividades; a menudo disponen de toda la semana libre y, en ocasiones, incluso de la semana anterior, dedicando dos o tres días a celebrar Las Fallas allí mismo, dentro del recinto escolar,” Sanchez dija. “Esto puede implicar actividades tales como manualidades o la elaboración artesanal de pequeños monumentos. Estas celebraciones tienen lugar en todo el sistema educativo, aunque no todas y cada una de las escuelas de Valencia participan.”
Con el lugar de reunión de la Unión de Estudiantes Hispanos que se celebró, querían organizar un evento informal al que la gente pudiera pasarse unos minutos o una hora, simplemente para pasar el rato. Lo más popular del evento fue el pan dulce, que consiste en una gran variedad de panes dulces y pasteles mexicanos.
